The history of the Normans began a long time before 1066. Originating from the 'Norsemen' they were one of the most successful warrior tribes of the Dark Ages that came to dominate Europe from the Baltic Sea to the island of Sicily and the borders of Eastern Europe.
Beginning as Viking raiders in the eighth century, the Normans not only changed the landscape of Europe but were changed by their new conquests. As a military force they became unstoppable; as Conqerors, they established their own kingdom in Normandy from where they set out on a number of devastating campaigns, where they also introduced innovations in politics, architecture and culture.
In A Brief History of the Normans Leading French historian, Francois Neveux, gives an accessible and authoritative introduction.

brief but intense
Würden Sie A Brief History of the Normans noch mal anhören? Warum?
A Brief History of the Normans is the best source for the matter, I could find in the Audible / Kindle universe. While there are many accounts focusing on the Norman invasion of England, this one goes back to the onset of the viking conquests of the 8th and 9th century and presents a very detailed description of the founding of the Duchy of Normandy and its ensuing history. It furthermore covers the conquest of England, the Norman history of southern Italy and Sicily and the Norman contribution to the crusades!
Although a broad range of material is traversed, there is an abundance of details and I found it rather hard to follow. Contributing to this are two factors: On one hand, there is little time left to provide context, so I had to read up a bit on French and English history of the period comprehend everything, on the other hand, the text is clearly not intended for oral presentation and requires more concentration than for instance the lectures of the "Great Courses" series.
After listening to some chapters (especially those central chapters dedicated to the events in Normandy itself) multiple times, I fond it very rewarding and would definitely recommend it!

spannend, informativ, und gut gelesen !!
Würden Sie A Brief History of the Normans noch mal anhören? Warum?
Ich werde dieses Buch bestimmt mehrmals anhören. Man kann immer wieder neue Aspekte gewinnen und die Geschichte der Normannen erlebe ich sowieso gern noch mal neu.
Welcher Moment von A Brief History of the Normans ist Ihnen besonders im Gedächtnis geblieben?
Die Geschichte von Rollo sticht hervor. Ich war bereits durch die TV-Serie Vikings vorgewärmt und hab deshalb schon Vorwissen gehabt, da ich außerdem stets immer nachlese, wie die Sachen historisch korrekt so waren. Das heißt, man benötigt schon ein bisschen Vorkenntnisse um dieses Hörbuch gut finden zu können.
Hat Ihnen Jonathan Keeble an der Geschichte etwas vermittelt, was Sie vielleicht beim Selberlesen gar nicht bemerkt hätten?
Jonathan Keeble ist mein Lieblingssprecher im englischen Bereich, im deutschen Bereich ist es Reinhard Kuhnert. Ich kannte ich schon durch die Simon Scarrow Bücher und hab das Hörbuch wegen dieses Sprechers geholt. Das Gute an diesem Sprecher: Die Sprache ist deutlich, sehr gut akzentuiert, sehr vielseitig, sehr immersiv.
Hätten Sie das Hörbuch am liebsten in einem Rutsch durchgehört?
Ich hab das Hörbuch in drei Tagen durchgehört. Angemerkt soll sein, daß ich nur abends höre, da ich tagsüber arbeite, und meistens nur eine Stunde vor dem Schlafengehen. Aber hier hab ich voll weitergehört, es war einfach klasse.
Was wäre für andere Hörer sonst noch hilfreich zu wissen, um das Hörbuch richtig einschätzen zu können?
