The lives of the Barretts, a normal suburban New England family, are torn apart when 14-year-old Marjorie begins to display signs of acute schizophrenia.

Tedious with some plotholes
Some parts of the book are beautiful and well written, but the story as a whole disappointed me. In fact, I was very surprised considering the good reviews I had seen about it. The book has no horror elements, the parent characters are empty, confusing and inconsistent in their behaviour both with reality and their own stories. Some parts had great potential but were lumped together or destroyed by some silly outcome. Could've been much better.

Disturbing and brilliant
When I started the book, I thought I knew what to expect. But I had absolutely no idea. I’m left speechless and disturbed. I need some nice, pastel coloured things now. A lot of them.

Exorzismus, Psychose und Medienhype - unausgegoren
A HEAD FULL OF GHOSTS weiß nicht, was es sein will – Exorzismus-Horror, die Dokumentation einer Psychose, Familiendrama, Medien- oder Religionskritik. Das wird alles in einen Topf geworfen, ohne jemals zu irgendeiner konkreten Schlussfolgerung zu kommen. Von der bissigen, treffenden Darstellung des TV-Zirkus und einem heftigen Schluss mal abgesehen, ein (Hör-)buch, bei dem mir eine Aussage gefehlt hat, die über pure Verstörung hinausgeht. Von vielen hoch gelobt, weiß ich nicht, warum ich das so gut finden soll. Schade.
Zur Sprecherin:
Joy Osmanski ist gut gewählt. Eine junge Stimme, und da die Erzählerin eine junge Frau sein soll, die sich in Ereignisse aus ihrer Kindheit zurückversetzt, passt das. Sorge, kindliche Unbekümmertheit, Angst, Neugier – das bringt sie alles gut rüber. Tadellose Leistung.
