Unterhaltsam und informativ
Ein sehr guter, kurzweiliger und unterhaltsamer Überblick über das Mittelalter. Eine sehr gute Balance zwischen Überblick und Details. Gut strukturiert und verständlich, angenehmer Sprecher, nette Effekte (musikalische Untermalung zum Anfang und Ende des Kapitels, Zitate mit Echo-Effekt). Sehr empfehlenswert.

Propagandaschrift
Was genau hätte man an A History of the Middle Ages noch verbessern können?
So ziemlich alles kann man verbessern. Unter dem Titel hatte ich mir eine objektive Geschichtsstunde über das Mittelalter versprochen. Aber es ist eine unreflektierte, offensichtlich (und unerträglich) einseitige Darstellung der überlegenen christlichen und anglosächsischen Lebensweise.
Wie hat der Erzähler das Buch beeinflusst?
Der Erzähler passt zum Buch - klingt wie eine schlechte epische Erzählung.
Sie mochten dieses Buch nicht ... Haben Sie vielleicht irgendwelche rettenden Maßnahmen dafür?
Rettende Maßnahme wäre eine Umbenennung in "Rettung der Welt durch das Christentum im Mittelalter" oder so was in der Richtung. Verhindert, dass jemand eine neutrale Geschichtsschreibung erwartet.
Was wäre für andere Hörer sonst noch hilfreich zu wissen, um das Hörbuch richtig einschätzen zu können?
Wem Objektivität egal ist und wer gerne einiges über die Überlegenheit des Christentums erfahren möchte - nur zu.

heavily biased, apologetic, irrational, nausiating
I was hoping for a well founded, unpreoccupied and comprehensive approach upon the vast an fascinating epoch of history called the middle ages. The authors manage to tell an entertaining and informative story. BUT I wish they stopped right there. Because I found the selfrightous attitude and unflexible self-centered judgemental hipocracy the text conveys almost unbearable. The book is heavily biased towards pro-christian, anglo-saxon conservative values and it gets very clear indeed just what exactly the authors own convictions about christianity, politics, scociety etc are. The legthy apologetic ramblings about christianity and why it is the superior religion are absolutely preposterous and could well have been written in the 1890s.
Admitted: the narrator has his part in that, too. He reads the text like a play, with a heavy-handed manner that might even work if only this was a work of satire. But it is not and the venomous tone in wich this production denounces rationalism, scientific scepticism and liberal intelecualism in general is just unworthy for a book about history witch predends to be a mature work of academic rank.
