Inhaltsangabe

In A Shaman's Miraculous Tools for Healing, Alberto Villoldo, a pioneer in the areas of energy healing and shamanism, recounts 12 stories of miraculous healings. Meet a dancer who could barely walk until a series of sessions with Villoldo, a businesswoman who is freed from headaches and discovers the benefits of an integrated interior life, and a young woman who confronts her past and recovers from crippling depression. Each of these stories is rooted in Villoldo's experience as a healer, a traditional mental health professional, and a devotee of indigenous wisdom and lore from around the world. Villoldo has devoted 25 years of study to the healing practices of the Amazon and Andean shamans. By learning the ancient shaman wisdoms from Villoldo, we can heal disease, eliminate emotional suffering, and even grow new bodies that age and heal differently. The stories in this book are amazing and inspiring.

Disturbing...

I have started to listen to this audio book with an open mind and a sincere interest in shamanism, and I have actually enjoyed the first about 1/4 of this book. From then on, some seriously doubts arose, however, and after listening to about half of the book, there was no way to keep listening with an open mind. After about 2/3, I gave up all together. "Disturbing" comes to mind, if one would be hard pressed to sum it all up in one word.

The majority of the storys/individuals in this book come across as 'fake' at best and severely mentally/emotionally unstable at worst - up to being clearly delusional and/or suicidal. While the first 'case stories' do hint at some value of the methods (if there are, in fact, any methods, as that is never explained in detail) applied by A. Villoldo and the people interviewed seem sane enough... further into the book, the stories get more and more absurd. And no, this is not a question of 'faith in shamanism'. I do believe that shamanism can be a genuine source of healing. This is a question of whether or not the author is credible in his role as a shaman/healer. This book is a testament that very likely, he is not: these are - for the most part - stories of very disturbed individuals (with the odd exception of e.g. a grieving father, who comes across as genuine), who seek help from someone who comes across as taking advantage of these people financially.

To clarify the latter: taking financial advantage goes further then just advising his clients to pay for multiple sessions with him. In this book (as far as I could bear to read), the author advises every client to also become a student of his 'school of shamanism'. I have actually looked it up: a 6-month online course (100% online, no face to face tuition) comes at the staggering cost of $10.200, deposit of $2.000 non-refundable. If this is not a money-grabbing enterprise under the disguise of shamanism, I don't know what is...

Last I heard, shamans are not supposed to enrich themselves through healing others. Well, either that rule does not apply to Western shamans or the author of this book is everything but a genuine shaman. Who knows for sure? As this book documents, some severe doubts definitely seem in order, though.

So far my first experience with (books on) shamanism. Even though it was an unfortunate one, I am sure that there are other authors out there who do have genuine shamanistic wisdom to share.

and hope to find my way to somebody like Alberto Villoldo one Day. Very touching and interesting and fascinating stories. I have to admit that sometimes the speaker were a little bit to much for me... but it couldn't disturb the fascination. Thank you every one involviert for bringing it to me and sharing your gifts.
