The Sonnets

  • von William Shakespeare
  • Sprecher: Alex Jennings

  • ungekürztes Hörbuch

Everyone knows something of Shakespeare's sonnets, even if only in memorable fragments like "the darling buds of May," or "remembrance of things past," or "the marriage of true minds." For centuries these wonderfully crafted, intense lyrics have stood for something valued about youth, love, and the emotional complexities belonging to that time of life. This new recording presents all 154 of Shakespeare's sonnets, using the New Cambridge Shakespeare texts.

Qualified recommendation

It is wonderful to have the complete sonnets available as an audio book. The recitation lets the poetry speak for itself without any superfluous adornment. However, it might be felt by some to be somewhat lacking in liveliness. I would give it four stars. However, I do have some quibbles. First, I find the lute interplays unnecessary. Furthermore, neither the composer (Dowland?) nor artist are identified. That makes for one star less.More important, the usefulness of the book is severely limited by there not being a track index (at least not in WMP 11). This makes it impossible to listen to specific sonnets. On my portable player (a Cowon D2) even the section navigation is not available. For this I must subtract another star.
