The time is World War II. The place is a brutal prison camp deep in Japanese-occupied territory. Here, within the seething mass of humanity, one man, an American corporal, seeks dominance over both captives and captors alike. His weapons are human courage, unblinking understanding of human weaknesses, and total willingness to exploit every opportunity to enlarge his power and corrupt or destroy anyone who stands in his path.
This enthralling masterpiece about life as a prisoner of war will keep listeners spellbound from the first chapter to the last.

great Story wonderfully told

This story got me hooked on Clavell and the whole Asian Saga from the start. The world Clavell describes he has actually experienced hence, due to his extraordinary talent for dialogues and situations one can be there in the story with all its pain and hardship and glory. The scene with the dog I will never forget.
But without the reader even the greatest story wont come to live. Simon Vance is excellent in reading with the various characters he is a real good actor not like John Lee who doesn't even know one accent right and shouldn't be narrating anything where foreign accents are to be read.

At this point I have to mention the Gai-Jin which had been completely destroyed by a narrator who can no accent which is infuriating that he got to read a book that lives from his diversity. In his narrating all the characters, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, French and so on, are told with the same idiotic fake french accent and are impossible to tell apart.

Also John Lee read the Gai-Jin with such a lack of passion as if it was a punishment for him to read the book. It sure is a punishment for the listener and a waste of money.
I had to give back the book because it was unbearable to listen to so I couldn't write a review. Never again I will buy an audio that is read by John Lee. Unforgivable, not for the waste of money but for the disrespect of a great author.
