Great book, underwhelming narrator

Having read the first two instalments of this series in the German translation, I was really looking forward to listening to this sequel in the original.
I loved the content. It kept me glued to my earphones despite the really underwhelming narration. It's a great story, transporting us back to Edwardian times. Most of the characters were positively lovable, but of course there were some 'bad' ones among them. The story was interesting, the characters fascinating, the connection between then and now really well made, as was the denouement. So, I'd absolutely recommend READING this book, but I can't recommend to LISTEN to it.

The narrator didn't have any range of voice, so males and females all sounded alike. She tried to make up for this lack by giving terrible fake accents to the sisters. For heaven's sake, it is even spelled out that the sisters were raised bilingual -- English and French -- from the cradle, AND they had lived in England for several years by now. Maybe it would have helped if the accent would at least have sounded French -- alas, it sounded Russian at times, and undefinable at other times. And as if this wasn't bad enough, the narrator had the deaf boy shout his sign language, which hurt my ears.

Of all the many books I've listened to, this is the first time I'm writing a negative review about the narration, but I feel that I should warn potential listeners.
