Henry Pulling, a retired bank manager, meets his septuagenarian Aunt Augusta for the first time in over 50 years at his mother’s funeral. Soon after, she persuades Henry to abandon South wood, his dahlias and the Major next door to travel through Brighton, Paris, Istanbul, Paraguay...
Accompanying his aunt, Henry joins a shiftless, twilight society: mixing with hippies, war criminals and CIA men, as well as smoking pot, breaking all the currency regulations and eventually coming alive after a dull suburban life.

Exquisitely Entertaining!

A wonderful tale, part comedy, part spy thriller, but foremost a personal travelogue of man's search for his own purpose.

A Joyful Journey

At the funeral of his mother Henry Pulling, a retired bank manager in his mid-50s, meets his aunt Augusta for the first time. With that not only the adventure of his so-far quite life, but a new, adventurous life starts for him.

In the first part of the novel he travels with his aunt into the realm of her past: Brighton, Paris and with the Orient-Express to Istanbul, Boulogne. Then the reality of his old, boring existence hits him and in part two he travels to her, up the La Plata River…

The book is tremendously funny and full of subtle humour. Thanks to the brilliant reading by Tim Pigott-Smith it is just a joy listening to the tale because all the characters come to life with their distinct accents and mannerisms.
