Astonishingly precise report of German WW2 officer

Using his personal war diary and other day-to-day reports Siegfried Knappe was able to put together an astonishingly precise report of his experiences as a German artillery officer in WW2 at almost all fronts. With the help of Ted Brusaw they created an account that is both gripping and well-imaginable.
Partly questionable is if Knappe - as he claims - really knew practically nothing about the Nazi/German atrocities especially in the extermination camps and in the war against Russia. He presents himself as someone who fought in agreement with the Haag convention. My own interviews with former German soldiers 40 years after the war indicated that most of them knew at least something... New to me were many insights into the life as a prisoner of war in Soviet Russia, though Knappe experienced a less severe fate there than many did.

I still recommend this book very much as it is reported in a very personal way.

In addition, I'd like to recommend the very well-written war report TANK RIDER from Evgeni Bessonov, officer in the Red Army, whose account played partly very nearby Knappes story, but on the other side of the front.

the complete story and way to almost all german fronts during wwii..he was an Frontlinie officer and in the last year a staff officer. could not stop hearing his story...
