Angie is the only one in her family - maybe the only one in the world - who believes her captured war-hero sister is still alive. Angie needs to believe it. It’s better than thinking about last year, when she tried to kill herself in front of a packed gym. Better than trying to steer clear of Stacy Ann Sloan and her posse of ultra-mean girls. Better than dealing with her corporate-lawyer mother, who wants to know only one thing: When is Angie going to lose exactly 29 pounds?
Then a new girl, KC, arrives in Dryfalls, Ohio. She’s beautiful, hip, and smart, and everyone wants to know her. From the minute they meet, KC sees the real Angie, not the fat girl hiding from her pain under a mountain of junk food. She sees Angie for who she really is: someone who just might shake things up - on the basketball court and in KC’s life. Outrageous and touching, this darkly comic, anti-romantic romance brings us unforgettable characters on the edge.

Going Back in Time

This book takes you back to the time when you were a teenager. It is a glimpse into the mind of Angie (Fat Angie even to herself).
She is fat, she has had a breakdown, her sister has probably died in war - she's troubled. Or maybe not?
Angie is genuine.
Angie stands up for her sister.
Angie does not give up.
Enter: A little bit of romance - KC Romance - the new girl.
For her Angie is not fat, for her Angie is beautiful. But KC's got history ... whatever that means.
I enjoyed this listen very much, because firstly the narrator has the almost uncanny ability to speak the voices of the characters. Secondly, I enjoyed being in Angie's mind. I was as frustrated as her with her inability to communicate at times, although her inner world seemed so much more colorful and articulate. I enjoyed her sarcasm aimed at her mother, therapist and of course Stacy Ann, her arch enemy and leader of the pack of Fat Angie Haters. Of course it's hard being a teenager. We forget that.
Thirdly I think this book can open minds. It's beautiful, simple, complicated, ugly, frustrating, romantic - all at the same time.
