The night manager is Jonathan, a veteran of clandestine operations. In flight from a failed marriage and his own past, he has taken refuge in the luxury hotel trade. Yet he finds no escape from his demons. Driven by a desire for atonement and by an inherited patriotism, Jonathan allows himself to be recruited as a British secret agent with a mission to expose the murderer of the woman he himself betrayed. His odyssey takes him across Britain and Canada to the Caribbean and the jungles of Panama. But there are more treacherous jungles still in Whitehall and Washington.

Predators rule the world

Gripping story, very good reader.
A few dark passages though. I must have missed out a few details that might have been easier to check in book form. I guess I shall give it a second listening after some time, in order to get the complete background picture. It certainly is worth it: the prose style is beautiful, and there are layers of world wisdom under the overlying action story. Only the sentimental bits are a little tedious and unconvincing, that`s why I gave only four stars.
The story itself is a complex one, with not only one villain but a whole bunch of them, and not only one heroic secret agent but several rivalling English and American outfits of "espiocrats" lurking in the background, treading on each other's toes and sometimes betraying each other. We get a deeply unnerving glimpse into to spy business and into the world of big international crime connections, including bankers, lawyers, politicians, aristocrats, company executives and so on.
It is a deeply unnerving glimpse of the (almost) real world. Edward Snowden is there to confirm it all.
