A space explorer wearing a force shield encounters a little problem when he makes first contact. Based on a story by Robert Sheckley, this episode of X Minus One originally aired on July 11, 1957. X Minus One premiered in April 1955 on NBC and ran until January 1958. Like its predecessor series, Dimension X, X Minus One featured stories by the greatest names in modern science fiction: Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Clifford Simak, Robert Bloch, and many more.

"[X Minus One] brought current SF to radio, providing adaptations of many excellent new stories and thus allowing the public to appreciate the best science fiction available at the time." (Michael Ashley, The Time Machines: The Story of the Science-Fiction Pulp Magazines)

The perfect protection

For your first contact mission among the wild natives, here's the perfect protection: A force shield that will keep every harm from you.

Any harm.

Even a friendly handshake.

Yes, it did sound too good to be true...

A great audio play version of one of Robert Sheckley's fine & humorous SF stories. The sound quality isn't the greatest (everything sounds a bit muffled), hence only 4 stars.

Still, if you've never heard of Robert Sheckley before, here's a great, short introduction to the "Voltaire with Soda".
