In a universe where corruption and deception rule all aspects of life, sparks of rebellion threaten to ignite.
As the Resistance leader, Zarya Starska's only goal is to topple the government that destroyed her entire family and left her penniless. Her biggest asset is a mysterious man known only as Kere.
But Kere has a dark secret. Born into a world that is as privileged as it is corrupt, his real name is Darling Cruel - and he is heir to the government Zarya wants to overthrow. No one has ever seen the real man behind the legend - no one except Zarya. But when she allows a weapon he designed to be used against his beloved sister, all bets are off.
Betrayed by the Resistance, Darling's goal is not only to reign, but to kill every Resistance member he can find. Zarya must stop Darling's reign of terror, but can she reach past his insanity to restore the hero who once fought by her side?

Worst book ever

Worst book ever...I bought it as an audiobook because I really like the narrator and I have read the previous books and found them - if not special - at least entertaining.

Wow - this is her momentary peek of tortured men...I mean, is SK even able to write other characters than tortured beyond anything imaginable?
If you thought Acheron was tortured - think again - Darling Cruel can top this...especially when he is improsioned by his fiancees men and, I'm not explaining everyting here...while he hears her talking outside.
So - it took me weeks to get through because I wanted to be able to write an honest review (not the kind of "it's terrible, I couldn't read it"-kind). I was only able to listen about half an hour/day - otherwise the sheer simplicity, annoying stupidity, cruelty and the repetition of patterns was too much.

So - I think Zarya is my new "worst heroine" ever - she is not only simple minded (I couldn't find anything in her that even quaified her as leader of the Resistance), she is incompetent, too. Most disgusting trait has been her feeling of being mistreated by Darling and his friends after they had found him and imprisoned her.

Not to mention a whole nation of idots who all changed their opinions like the wind, a family who ignored, accused and mistreated Darling for their own reasons and never even bothered to check or explain.

Darling himself - well - sorry, but even he is not human, he must be superhuman to still love all the people who misjugded, mistreated and used him. Mrs. Kenyon - this is just too much....

Only positive apsects in the book had been that later we at least get with the involvment of the Sentella some of the funny banter SK books are known for. And I'm in love with the "gay" best friend...he was the only bright spot in the book.

But I think if I never hear the phrase "How could he (not)...." or "How could she (not)..." again, it wouldn't be to soon. First in the 3rd Nick-book and now in this one, too.
