But life in the RMN isn’t exactly what he expected. Boot camp is rough and frustrating; his first ship assignment lax and disorderly; and with the Star Kingdom of Manticore still recovering from a devastating plague, the Navy is possibly on the edge of budgetary extinction.
The Star Kingdom is a minor nation among the worlds of the Diaspora, its closest neighbors weeks or months away, with little in the way of resources. With only modest interstellar trade, no foreign contacts to speak of, a plague ravaged economy to rebuild, and no enemies looming at the hyper limit, there are factions in Parliament who want nothing more than to scrap the Navy and shift its resources and manpower elsewhere.
But those factions are mistaken. The universe is not a safe place.
Travis Long is about to find that out.

Great story about the very early days
We are following the story of Travis Long in the early days of manticor after the plague. Travis signed up for the Navi in the non-officer ranks. His trade is that he always sticks to the rules and therefore encounters difficulties in a degraded Navi. Despite his by the book attitude he amazingly has the ability to think out of the box. This brings him to participate in the more rare opportunities of special assignments in the Navi these days.
I really enjoyed this book. It does not have the strong action driven plot of the Honor Harrington books but gives an interesting view on the old space ship and traveling era. Of cause there is also action but it is actually not really necessary to enjoy this story. Different to the books of the other side series of the Honorverse this book is a complete consistent story that makes me want to continue this series.
