In the early days of the Civil War, rumors of gold in the frozen Klondike brought hordes of newcomers to the Pacific Northwest. Anxious to compete, Russian prospectors commissioned inventor Leviticus Blue to create a great machine that could mine through Alaska’s ice.
Thus was Dr. Blue’s Incredible Bone-Shaking Drill Engine born. But on its first test run the Boneshaker went terribly awry, destroying several blocks of downtown Seattle and unearthing a subterranean vein of blight gas that turned anyone who breathed it into the living dead.
Now it is 16 years later, and a wall has been built to enclose the devastated and toxic city. Just beyond it lives Blue’s widow, Briar Wilkes. Life is hard with a ruined reputation and a teenaged boy to support, but she and Ezekiel are managing. Until Ezekiel undertakes a secret crusade to rewrite history. His quest will take him under the wall and into a city teeming with ravenous undead, air pirates, criminal overlords, and heavily armed refugees. And only Briar can bring him out alive.

"Intelligent, exceptionally well written and showcasing a phenomenal strong female protagonist who embodies the complexities inherent in motherhood, this yarn is a must-read for the discerning steampunk fan." ( Publishers Weekly)

The Good, the Bad and the Undead

I admit, this is my first Steampunk novel and I probably will not become a fan of this genre.

During the Civil War the genius inventor Leviticus developed a huge drilling machine to mine for gold under the icecap in Alaska. The first trial run of the machine destroys most of Seattle and tears deep holes into the ground, which start to leak a poisonous gas into the surrounding area turning people into Zombies. Zeke, Leviticus' son sneaks into the sealed city to learn the truth about his father. When his mother Briar finds out, she follows him and tries to save him.

The story has all the ingredients of a terrific adventure, a dark and mostly deserted city, haunted by zombies and ruled by the mad inventor Dr. Minnericht, who seems to be a blueprint of Briar's husband Leviticus.

The story is nicely written and takes some surprising twists and turns, but did not impress me much. The characters do not ring true or lack depth. Zeke's infantile stupidity and pubertal behavior started to get on my nerve. The main characters follow simple clichés, the poor people, who scratch out a living in this terrible environment, are basically kind hearted and helpful, while Dr. Minnericht and his army of gangsters are simply bad.

Overall the story is entertaining, but I have expected more.

Alles in allem
eine definitive Hörempfehlung von mir
