A thousand years ago evil came to the land and has ruled with an iron hand ever since. The sun shines fitfully under clouds of ash that float down endlessly from the constant eruption of volcanoes. A dark lord rules through the aristocratic families and ordinary folk are condemned to lives in servitude, sold as goods, labouring in the ash fields. But now a troublemaker has arrived and there is rumour of revolt. A revolt that depends on criminal that no-one can trust and a young girl who must master Allomancy - the magic that lies in all metals.

Super-Girl topples the Empire

I came to Mistborn after I read Sanderson's finishing novels of the 'wheel of time'. What a difference, Sanderson tried harder, when he wrote the 'wheel of time' or he simply became a better writer.

Mistborn is a frugal meal as far as phantasy writing goes. The plot is fairly simple, the characters are one dimensional and with the exception of Kelsier and Vin (the mistborn), lack depth and profile.

In a world, where ash-fall and mist smother life and turn everything into brown and grey colors, a tyrant (the great ruler) and the ruling class (great houses) exploit the Skaa in incredible cruelty. Skaa are without any rights and can get killed, maimed or raped at will. The luxurious and decadent life of the great houses is based on the slave work of the Skaa.

Kelsier, a mistborn, escapes from the pits of Hathsin and intends to rid the empire of the great ruler and his noble houses. Vin, a young mistborn teenage girl, joins forces with him. Together with a band of criminals they take up the seemingly hopeless fight. Fortunately there is Allomancy, which gives incredible power to the mistborn by swallowing and burning metals or alloys.

On the positive side, there is a lot of action and the battle scenes are well written and have enough blood and gore for the ones, who like that. Allomancy is a nice variation to the standard magic in phantasy tales. The concept is logically built and quite complex in in all its details.

Unfortunately the world is poorly described and lacks detail and structure, Everything is brown and grey and there is a lot of fog at night. A little bit more would have been quite nice. Vin, the heroine of the tale is plastered with clichés and the resulting silliness tended to annoy me. Not every teenage girl with a brain would be easily corrupted by beautiful dresses and forget the cruelty of the noblehouses, just because they are so elegant. Some of the other characters would be quite appealing to the reader, if there would be more detail. Marsh, Kelzier's brother plays a vital part in the story, but we do not know anything about him. Breeze and the Terrisman Tutor are similar examples.

Teil 1-3. Fantasy at its fines mit einem Abstrich.
