The stunning debut fantasy novel from author Peter V. Brett. The Painted Man, book one of the Demon Cycle, is a captivating and thrilling fantasy adventure, pulling the reader into a world of demons, darkness and heroes.Voted one of the top ten fantasy novels of 2008 by
Sometimes there is very good reason to be afraid of the dark…Eleven-year-old Arlen lives with his parents on their small farmstead, half a day's ride from the isolated hamlet of Tibbet's Brook.
As dusk falls upon Arlen's world, a strange mist rises from the ground; a mist that promises a violent death to any foolish enough to brave the coming darkness, for hungry corelings - demons that cannot be harmed by mortal weapons - materialize from the vapours to feed on the living. As the sun sets, people have no choice but to take shelter behind magical wards and pray that their protection holds until the creatures dissolve with the first signs of dawn.
When Arlen's life is shattered by the demon plague, he is forced to see that it is fear, rather than the demons, which truly cripples humanity. Believing that there is more to his world than to live in constant fear, he must risk leaving the safety of his wards to discover a different path.In the small town of Cutter's Hollow, Leesha's perfect future is destroyed by betrayal and a simple lie. Publicly shamed, she is reduced to gathering herbs and tending an old woman more fearsome than the corelings. Yet in her disgrace, she becomes the guardian of dangerous ancient knowledge.
Orphaned and crippled in a demon attack, young Rojer takes solace in mastering the musical arts of a Jongleur, only to learn that his unique talent gives him unexpected power over the night.Together, these three young people will offer humanity a last, fleeting chance of survival.

Gave up after 4h

One of the few audiobooks in the last years that I could not suffer through.

The bad:
- narrator is hard to understand in loud environments - strong jumps is reading volume
-> unsuitable for listening is loud car, for example
- very SLOW - after 4h the author isn't even close to being done with setting up characters
- this setup is done with lots of trivial and banal details - not of which are surprising or particularly interesting. As said... trivial...
- LOTS of logic issues in the world building
-> many could maybe be ignored in books with more superficial scenarios - but the author describes everything in great detail - then I expect these details to make sense!
--- human have to hide from demons for 300+ years but many might SEVERAL houses lose their protection and people get killed - at this rate humanity would have gone extinct in a few decades
--- demon go after all living and are everywhere at night - but there still exists lots of normal (unwarded) wild life
--- fire demons magical fire is watered against - but wards do not protect against normal fire - and yet people are not burned out of their houses using traditional fire (started by magical fire outside wards)
--- several situation where people cuts it very close or too close in getting behind wards before night fall
---> forgetting pets or livestock outside and running after them
---> wrongly thinking "I can make it in time" after years of every day experience in the same location
---> bad discipline in getting stuff done in time after hundredths of years of this being required for survival
---> and more and more and more
- most people illiterate even though letters are only link to other villages and cities and people having LOTS of time in evening due to having to be behind wards at nightfall
- cure to "demon sickness" only known to a herb woman 2 days away - after hundreds of years of humans surviving against demons and them being the most common cause of death
- some descriptions of how wards work seem inconsistent - but this close to me stopping to listen after 4h - so maybe it gets explained consistently later on
- many more small details

Normally I'm happy ignoring all such issues if the book provides a "wild ride" or good entertainment.
But the first 4h are mostly boring and unsurprising and the author draws everything it in details - in details that don't match up!

The good:
- interesting general idea and concepts for world
- good general "writing craftsmanship" - the author writes very well - the issue is with the plot and the logic, NOT with the writing skills
- except for the volume jump I find the narrator quite good (e.g. I do not agree with another listeners comment that the narrator style is flat and sterile)

Theoretisch gut, aber zu viele Logikfehler

Der Grundgedanke der Geschichte ist wirklich gut und sie ist auch spannend geschrieben, aber es gibt ein paar Logikfehler, die mir leider den Spaß daran nehmen.
