Entertaining

Do not expect high fantasy, but it is really entertaining if it meets your humour. The speaker is awesome

Good story- Bad writing

Overall I did enjoy the story. Its fun as long as you don't take it too seriously.
Just a fair warning tho- the writing could really be better. it's basically one exposition dump after the other with a few other scenes sprinkled in between. While I am fine with exposition dumping in the beginning of a book ( especially in a series) this was a bit much for me. the writer also constantly repats itself with annoyed me after a while. It felt like the writer thought of the reader as stupid sometimes. He kept spelling things out and repeating those as if one couldn't tell from the rest. I'm not a fan of that. The writing felt like a children's book at at times, even though its content and themes are very much on the mature side. I was also not a big fan of the narrator. He basically kept one tone the whole way through, even though I liked some of the voices he did. but generally his bland way of reading really took away some of the fun scenes and dialogue.
But I did enjoy the story, concept and characters overall so I will be continuing.

fun, entertaining and lovely

I really enjoyed listening to the book. took me some time to get into it, but then I really enjoyed how the whole story turned out.

Erfrischend anders

Diese unkonventionelle Geschichte um Waldo und sein großes Abenteuer behauptet sich im Storytelling hervorragend gegen den ewigen Einheitsbrei der Magie mit Mittelalter-Theme. Auch wenn die Hauptcharaktere in ihren Gedankengängen an einigen Stellen naiv wirken, gefällt mir das Zusammenspiel und die daraus entstehenden Situationen sehr.

Ich kann nur empfehlen, sich darauf einzulassen. Es bringt Spaß :)

Der Sprecher leistet gute Arbeit, könnte aber an einigen Stellen die Situationskomik etwas besser rüberbringen. Ich habe die erste Hälfte des Buches gelesen bevor ich auf die Hörbuchvariante umgestiegen bin und fand manche Szenen beim Lesen teilweise witziger als nun beim Hören. Kann allerdings auch daran liegen, dass ich sie noch in Erinnerung hatte.

Like listening to a cliché shonen isekai manga

The story is simple entertainment which is it's strongest point. But the characters are so annoyingly archetype isekai/shonen manga without any hint of self-awareness, the author didn't seem to notice it himself. The slapstick humor and mannerisms of the characters are taken from old-school shonen manga and have no basis in real human behavior, or do you know any girl clasping their hands, winding herself from side to side while blushing and talking about her dream of true love to a guy she fancies? The female characters are all what an incel dreams women would behave like, if only they would realise he was a MAIN CHARACTER. But luckily we can insert ourself into the protagonist.
I listened to the first book and won't continue but if you look for simple entertainment and enjoy shonen manga character archetypes, go for it.

I do NOT reccommend this

I had high hopes for this story. The idea to create a main protagonist, who was raised as a dark mage and is embarrassed that his talent lies in healing rather than necromancy, who goes out into the world, sounded good. I was expecting a funny story about a young mage, who finds out about true values, makes the world a better place and maybe even finds true love. Spoiler alert: it is not! While the first book is not too gruesome, it gets much, much worse. This is a story about cruelty, disregard for the life and feelings of others, torture, rape, mass and single murder and more such stuff. The morals are that anyone is opportunistic, treacherous and greedy - and if you‘re not, you‘re dead. If you are lucky. Don‘t expect a „happily ever after“. In fact, if you‘d like to take my advice: don‘t even start to listen to this audiobook.
