God asked Abraham to sacrifice his beloved son, Isaac, and Abraham replied obediently, 'Here I am'.
This is the story of a fracturing family in a moment of crisis. Over the course of three weeks in present-day Washington, DC, three sons watch their parents' marriage falter and their family home fall apart. Meanwhile, a larger catastrophe is engulfing another part of the world: a massive earthquake devastates the Middle East, sparking a pan-Arab invasion of Israel.
With global upheaval in the background and domestic collapse in the foreground, Jonathan Safran Foer asks us: what is the true meaning of home? Can one man ever reconcile the conflicting duties of his many roles - husband, father, son? And how much of life can a person bear?

It's been a while since I have been so spellbound by a book as I was with Here I Am. It's a dense novel spanning a wide set of themes, from love, marriage, and family to teenage alienation to being Jewish in today's USA to the political situation in the Middle East. This may sound overwhelming, but the writing is well paced and captivating, and for all its difficult subject matter, it's often simply hilariously funny.
Of course, at this point I would love just about anything read by Ari Fliakos, who may be the greatest narrator ever.

Sorry, J.S. Foer, I couldn't make it all the way to the end. This story is endless and lost in excessive descriptions of unnecessary details. After forcing myself to listen on, I finally gave up shortly after the middle. My apologies if I'm unjust because the second half is unexpectedly marvelous.
