Ivanhoe is the perfect novel for any listener who loves an action-packed adventure based on the mythology and legends of Medieval times in England. Set in the 12th century, Ivanhoe is the story of a young man who joins up with Richard the Lion Hearted during a dark time where England is split between the Normans and the Saxons, pitting friends and family against each other through the conquering of land and the changing seats of the Royal Family.
After Fighting in the Holy Crusades, Ivanhoe returns to reclaim his love, stolen from him by his own father who intends to marry her into Saxon Royalty as the descendant of a long dead king. King Richard, with little interest in ruling the Kingdom of England, has allowed his brother, the despicable Prince John, to rule in his absence, sending the land into dismal times. After his capture, Richard escapes Austria, where he travels in disguise awaiting a rising to overtake Prince John and reclaim the throne.
The novel is a riveting adventure of jousting knights, damsels in distress, burning castles, escape and capture, and includes the famous Robin Hood and his Merry Men of bandits in an attempt to save the true King and Ivanhoe.

A classic in itself, but hard to listen
The story in itself is really good and would deserve 5 stars, with all the interesting details.
But
1) the introduction already made it VERY hard to nit stop after 10 minutes already. Most characters are introduced in one go, describing the features of their looks, before you could start to get interested to them, really very boring 20 minutes!
2) the sentences are super super long. Maybe that is due to the century in which the story was written, but it is so hard to keep track and strenuous ...
3) ... especially as the speaker has a very weird way of pronouncing, the voice goes up and down unexpectedly, seemingly to wake me up after I fell asleep... With this sentence melody I do never know what sentence I am in,and what it is all about. Strengous and boring
4) the speakers normal voice is sympatic in principle, and one of his variations when he speaks deeper than usual, it is great. But he has more or less only one very annoying womanly voice where are women sound alike and are barely acceptable, and one additional „old male“ voice, which is not that bad than the woman’s voice, still not good.
So, if you are interested in classics, choose the book and get educated. But if you only want to get entertained, this is definitely the wrong book for you...
