Inhaltsangabe

Runner and company have safely left the city ahead of the siege. Completing their class promotions with barely any time to spare.

Unfortunately Runner hasn't discovered the password he needs to begin the logoff process to save the 400,000 or so crewmates left alive in this game where dying truly means death.

The game continues to shift and change with each day and as a byproduct of Runner's actions.

Not only do the rules change, but those he's with have changed. No longer simple programs, they have reached actual sentience.

Pressing himself ever onwards to learn more about the world he finds himself surprised at every turn.

On top of navigating the ever changing game, the outside world has contacted him directly. Now he has to begin to navigate the situation as a gamer, IT support, and an officer.

Of course this would all be a lot easier if he hadn't gotten captured within a few hours of leaving Crivel.

Fate seems to be stacking the deck against him as quickly as she can this time around.

Good story

Enjoyed the story worth the money if you like RPG and harems. Great combination of fantasy and scifi

The first cracks appear

Well, this book is still not that bad, it is enjoyable although a bit cheesy and you will shake your head a bit at certain points. This is also the point where the whole “Harem fantasy” kicks in and you will have to cringe along with that, if you want to know how the whole journey ends.

The end surprised me a bit and I would say hit me a bit emotionally, it runs contrary to what this trilogy is usually about.

I am also a bit sad that the main character basically abandons his sci-fi connections, well officially he outsourced them at least, and dives completely into the fantasy setting. In the end this book is not really as good as the first one but I would not go so far and only hand out 2 stars, as the characters are still likeable and the story presents a real struggle for our hero and we are rooting for him, while he tries to form a better world.

Therefore it is acceptable that the power balance shifts significantly in favor to the hero, as he needs it to get control over the outside forces, although this left me wondering at the end how the third book would deal with all that.

All in all I would say book one and two of this trilogy are still not that bad and you can enjoy them, if you don’t expect a masterpiece of science fiction/fantasy and are willing or even enjoying cheesy dialog and action from time to time.

Again Jeff Hays is great at breathing life into these people!
