Great start, very awful ending
The first 80% of this book were thoroughly enjoyable. There were a number of good characters, very entertaining supporting characters and some excellent dialogue. The story started of very strong as well. The tension between the couple was palpable, the descriptions believable. I really liked the way it was going and was looking forward to continue the story. But.

As the story progressed it became increasingly clear that the hints which were thrown out to confuse the reader were actually nonsensical when viewed in retrospective. I can always overlook plot weaknesses and hair raising impossibilities, but I cannot forgive when authors sacrifice the integrity of their characters only to throw readers off the scent.
Insofar, Lord Michael’s credibility suffered a lot.
Additionally, I don’t like evil overlords. A book does not require a major nemesis. It’s just very tiring to have mentally deranged monsters that are at once completely evil but also manage to fool every single person in the story. Yawn. This made the end of the book really ridiculous.
And the sexual content was very off-putting. It did not belong. The earlier insecurity of the bride, the doubts, the tension, the suspicion - this was all fantastic. But none of it made any sense as soon as this rather over-powering sexual attraction was added. Very contradictory and absolutely not needed in any regency romance.
