Inhaltsangabe

Few perspectives epitomize the sheer drama and sacrifice of combat more perfectly than those of the fighter pilots of World War II. As romanticized as any soldier in history, the World War II fighter pilot was viewed as larger than life: a dashing soul waging war amongst the clouds. In the 65-plus years since the Allied victory, stories of these pilots' heroics have never been in short supply. But what about their adversaries - the highly skilled German aviators who pushed the Allies to the very brink of defeat?

Of all of the Luftwaffe's fighter aces, the stories of Walter Krupinski, Adolf Galland, Eduard Neumann, and Wolfgang Falck shine particularly bright. In The German Aces Speak, for the first time in any book, these four prominent and influential Luftwaffe fighter pilots reminisce candidly about their service in World War II. Personally interviewed by author and military historian Colin Heaton, they bring the past to life as they tell their stories about the war, their battles, their lives, and, perhaps most importantly, how they felt about serving under the Nazi leadership of Hermann Göring and Adolf Hitler.

—————

I enjoy listening to WW2 eyewitness accounts on Audible but have mixed feelings about this audio book. On the one hand, there are interesting insights into the mindset of the pilots of that time. On the other hand, I'm definitely missing a critical discussion. Especially at the beginning, it is made clear that we listeners are supposed to view the pilots as chivalrous heroes who are only doing their duty for their country (or defending their country - which is an unfortunate term for German pilots as representatives of the aggressor in World War II). The constant definition of status and success based on the “number of kills” is also strange to me. The claim to one's own chivalry is difficult to reconcile with the use of the air force in the Spanish Civil War, which is presented very mildly in the audio book compared to other sources I have read about it. All in all, the audio book gives an authentic insight into the world of fighter pilots, although it is heavily glorified and a neutral or critical assessment is missing.

Authors glorify Luftwaffe pilots

I’m a German student of History and I’m amazed and extremely disgusted by the authors’ glorification of the Luftwaffe pilots. I don’t think their whole idea of recounting the careers of those pilots was doomed from the beginning but a lot of the authors’ remarks thoroughly disgust me. Like when they say that Germans should learn to be proud of their aviators and those men were heroes. Excuse me, but in what world do you live? Last time I checked dropping bombs on a foreign people that never provoked a war with you was deemed disgusting. Also, I think that people fighting to defend and thereby uphold a regime that gased and burned children should never EVER be called heroes. The simple idea makes me retch and convinces me that the authors aren’t widely read in the Second World War, and that the horrors the Germans inflicted haven’t truly struck home with the authors. A sad example of ignorance and the only comfort is that the authors aren’t German. If they had been, I would have truly been ashamed.

Very good stories

Very good to hear the stories Luftwaffe pilots can tell us.

Book wise, it would be good to have a short pause between the sections to make it clear where one stops and a new starts

Interesting first-hand views on the air war of WW2

Unusual perspective on the air war of WW2, seen through the eyes of German Luftwaffe officers, well put together and read professionally.
