The course also addresses one of history's greatest questions: Why did the Roman Empire fall? And you'll learn why most modern scholars believe that the empire did not "fall" at all, but, rather, changed into something very different - the less urbanized, more rural, early medieval world.

only little about later periods
A very good introduction, although many of the author's judgements have to be taken with a pinch of salt. What disappointed me a bit was that the imperial period was tackled only very briefly—for that, one should definitely look elsewhere. These lectures concentrate on the Roman revolution, anything else is merely context for that.

The important points in high relief
The great art of story telling in history is focussing on the important points and reconstructing the past, in this case a long gone past in an intelligible way for the layman. I think Prof. Fagan has quite cleverly and successfully managed this task by mixing a lot of social, economic, cultural background information in the narrative of the plain facts. Covering more than 1000 years in one course of 48 lectures means by necessity this is no more than an introduction to Roman history. But you can hardly look for a better starting point.
And the performance of the lecturer is of the highest standards, I just enjoyed listening.

Good overview using proper source material
Small details in the late antiquity lectures can be viewed as outdated and clichée ridden, especially regarding the migrations and the late military, e.g. the Rhine crossing of 406 and Gallienus' cavalry force. Otherwise a good overview which uses various ancient sources and does so well!

one of the best "great courses" i have ever heared
An awesome audiobook. Newbies can learn everything from scratch, but also for people with a solid history background this audiobook has much to offer. It's a pity that Prof. Fagan did not record another one on the endtimes of the roman empire, this would be really interesting, too!
