Wonderful continuation of the series!
I loved The Shadow of the Wind so much that I devoured it several times, but only recently moved on with the other instalments of The cemetery of forgotten books series. #2 was The Angel‘s Game which was also well written but very dark and with only rather tenuous links to the original story.
This book, #3 was shorter but sharper and brought both books together, providing a connection between bookseller’s son Daniel Sampere and tortured author David Martin. This connection comes in the form of Fermin, the lovable rogue that played such a big role in The Shadow of the Wind. We hear his backstory, dating to his time as a political prisoner in Barcelona’s Montjuic prison in the early years of Franco’s dictatorship.
Like the other books, the writing (and translation) is sublime and apart from the good story, one is transported to Barcelona- warts and all. It’s incredibly atmospheric and one learns so much about the civil war years and aftermath. Highly enjoyable and I can’t wait to read the final instalment!
While the narrator was good I wonder why they have a different one for every book - would have preferred more continuity.
