It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs - once thought of almost as gods - were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.
A representation of these laws is now written into the flesh of any who use the Gift, forcing those so marked into absolute obedience. As a student of the Gifted, Davian suffers the consequences of a war fought - and lost - before he was born. Despised by most beyond the school walls, he and those around him are all but prisoners as they attempt to learn control of the Gift. Worse, as Davian struggles with his lessons, he knows that there is further to fall if he cannot pass his final tests. But when Davian discovers he has the ability to wield the forbidden power of the Augurs, he sets into motion a chain of events that will change everything.
To the north, an ancient enemy long thought defeated begins to stir. And to the west, a young man whose fate is intertwined with Davian’s wakes up in the forest, covered in blood and with no memory of who he is...

Once youre used to narrators like Nick Podehl...
... Michael Kramer just doesn't hold up anymore. Smacking of lips for entire paragraphs, constant mixing of the different voices, the only characters you can really tell apart from their dialogue alone are those with an accent.
Adding to that the disaster of The Way of Kings, I'll try to avoid Michael Kramer as much as possible from now on.
Still liked the audiobook though

A treat for fans of Brandon Sanderson
very interesting magic system with lots of intricate explanations.
the characters are drawn in vivid colors and their actions are relatable in a good way.
Michael Kramer is great as always drawing you right into the action!

Do the ends justify the means?
Book 1 has a slow start and some pacing issues at times.
I also found it hard to believe, that the magically gifted arent used as Medics.
The magic system is left a bit vague and unexplored too.
That being said I was well entertained and enjoyed it a great deal. I am finished with book 2 which is more compelling overall.

Fantastic and fascinating!
This is a fascinating start to an epic adventure. The characters are believable and the magic system is just extremly clever and intriguing. Loved this book! Also, Michael Kramer does a great job at reading it!

A little bit of everything phantasy has to offer
While the flow of the story is nice. I lost a little bit interrest in the middle. My problem is the goku-power-lvl ending of the hero because its a trilogy and it leaves a lot of questions open, that should be no problem at that point.

A long listen than will pay off 100fold!
I've just completed the triology, and while I was enticed by this first part - let me assure you - it will pay off! Rarely have I red/listened to fantasy as conclusive and wholesome. 10/10 would recommend and listen again!

Solide Fantasy-Kost
Das Buch liefert solide Fantasy-Kost. Genreveteranen werden nichts revolutionäres Entdecken und manche Sachen lassen sich gut vorhersagen, aber mir hat es trotzdem Spaß gemacht dieses Hörbuch zu hören.

Not my cuppa, you might like it.
The narrator was great, as usual, but for a reason I can't quite figutr out, I stopped several times throughout the book. It was well written and had enough tension, but I guess it was just too... dreary for me? Perhaps also a bit too grandiose and pompous. The author clearly has big plans for this series, but I didn't find the protagonist and deuteragonists likeable enough to continue.
While I won't be continuing the series, I think people who like long, sprawling epic fantasy with prophecies and seemingly futile struggles against forces the reader doesn't understand will like this one.

superb performance, great book
Wonderfully narrated with fitting shifts of voice for various characters. A pleasure to listen to that makes the story even more capturing

Gute neue Fantasy Reihe!
Hat mich von der Art her etwas an "Das Rad der Zeit" erinnert, und mich von Anfang bis Ende sehr gut unterhalten!
