Toward the end of the Vietnam era, in a snug little Rhode Island seacoast town, wonderful powers have descended upon Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie, bewitching divorcées with sudden access to all that is female, fecund, and mysterious. Alexandra, a sculptor, summons thunderstorms; Jane, a cellist, floats on the air; and Sukie, the local gossip columnist, turns milk into cream.
Their happy little coven takes on new, malignant life when a dark and moneyed stranger, Darryl Van Horne, refurbishes the long-derelict Lenox mansion and invites them in to play. Thenceforth scandal flits through the darkening, crooked streets of Eastwick - and through the even darker fantasies of the town’s collective psyche.

Entertaining
Of course, I picked this book because I enjoy reading about witches and witchcraft. This audio book was a treat to listen to. Updike's talent lies in narrating, with his unusual descriptions and metaphors, with lots of humour while portraying three females witches. And it is not all about witchcraft, but about relations. Well done! I would have liked to continue listening, and therefore found the end a bit abrupt.

New Film Adaptation Desired :)
Interesting story, read beautifully. Kate Reading is a magician, in her language and other languages, switches in no time and sounds like a native speaker.
I have seen the film adaptation several times and enjoyed it each time. Now that I´m aware of the sexually explicit content which is told in a very relaxed, pleasantly normal and sophisticated way I´d really appreciate if a film-maker being able to do so as well (like Jane Campion and Julio Médem for example) would fall in love with the idea to create a new film adaptation :).

Erotic Tale for the Literary Epicure
What a prose, style and beauty, John Updike is incredible. I cannot remember of ever having read anything like that. While the prose is overwhelmingly beautiful, incredibly rich with pictures, allegories and little titbits of wisdom and insight, the story itself left me clueless.
Three modern era witches, Alexandra the sculptor, Jane the cellist and Sukie the gossip monger, do their little mischief in suburbia, the fictitious Eastwick, Rhode Island. The three women defy the rules of hypocritical small town America, seduce married men, get shamelessly drunk or high on weed and carelessly neglect their offspring. Unfortunately it looks like their aura and power feeds on the vitality of their lovers, who seem to wither away under their influence or come to disastrous endings.
The situation escalates, when the mysteriously attractive music lover, art collector and renegade scientist Darryl Van Horne comes into town. The three of them fall under his spell and soon enough they partake frequently in the carnal and orgiastic pleasures, his hot tub offers. The dreamlike paradisiac setting turns into disaster, when Darryl decides to marry the young protégé of the three witches.
Of course all of this is funny and entertaining, but somehow I expected more. Somehow I did not get the point of the story and especially the unexciting ending of the story disappointed me a little bit.
Regardless of all that, the prose alone makes this an outstanding novel.
